Understanding Boat Batteries and Battery Charging

Copper in History

About this time of year, when lightning strikes become frequent occurrences, we receive a good deal of mail asking about static dissipators such as the Lightning Master.

We no longer sell books. Books can now be sourced new or second hand through the internet far cheaper than we can hold and sell them for from here. For most people the propeller information in 'Boat Mechanical Systems Handbook' is enough. This is a specialized propeller book. Written by a practical sailer that knows his subject thoroughly.

This is one of a popular series of easy-to-understand yet, thorough treatments of the technical issues facing every boat owner. It comes fully illustrated with photos and technical drawings, from one of the foremost international authorities on marine electronics. This Book includes practical information on lead acid batteries.

BOAT & YACHT CORROSION CONTROL

Since the early eighteen hundreds, scientists have been solving the problems of corrosion. We are zeroing in on boat and yacht corrosion and can use the methods and reference tables that have been developed. Within a few hours you will be able to solve the so called mysteries of corrosion. It is fairly difficult to glance at a failed metal boat part and tell immediately what caused that particular failure. Most likely the failure was caused by a combination of reasons including wrong choice of alloy by the manufacturer, manufacturing error such as overheating, contamination or wrong coating, error in application by boat builder, water velocity, impurities or pollution in the electrolyte, temperature, vibration, stress, crevice, galvanic or stray current corrosion. In well designed boats, the main cause of failure galvanic, stray current, and to a large extent vibration, stress, and velocity corrosion can be controlled by following these easy directions. The metals we use on boats are normally alloys several metals mixed together.

This is another little gem from Payne, and complements perfectly his book entitled Understanding Boat Wiring. Again, it is not a large book almost pocket-sized, in fact yet it will help you not only understand the subject but assist you in solving difficulties. From general information, the author deals with the different types of battery, their rating and selection, safety, installation and maintenance. There are also sections on alternators, regulators, and alternative charging, from wind and sun. John C.

An earthing system UK and IEC or grounding system US connects specific parts of an electric power system with the ground , typically the Earth's conductive surface, for safety and functional purposes. Regulations for earthing systems vary considerably among countries, though most follow the recommendations of the International Electrotechnical Commission. Regulations may identify special cases for earthing in mines, in patient care areas, or in hazardous areas of industrial plants. In addition to electric power systems, other systems may require grounding for safety or function. Tall structures may have lightning rods as part of a system to protect them from lightning strikes.

Copper in History

Copper is a mineral and an element essential to our everyday lives. It is a major industrial metal because of its high ductility, malleability, thermal and electrical conductivity and resistance to corrosion. It is an essential nutrient in our daily diet. And, its antimicrobial property is becoming increasingly important to the prevention of infection.
