The P3a has been associated with brain activity related to the engagement of attention especially orienting and involuntary shifts to changes in the environment and the processing of novelty. In Squires and colleagues conducted a study attempting to resolve some of the questions surrounding what neural process the P reflects. At the time, several researchers suggested that there needed to be active attention towards the target stimuli in order to elicit a P, in part because stimuli that were ignored resulted in a P with a smaller amplitude or no P at all. On the other hand, some research had shown that subjects exhibit a P to unpredictable stimuli in an ongoing repetitive series of stimuli, even when the stimuli were classified as irrelevant and subjects were asked to ignore them while completing another task i. It was intriguing that you could elicit a P in conditions with active attention and those of non-attention. Upon further investigation it turned out that when comparing the two types of P potentials, they differed in latency and scalp topography.

P latency and amplitude in Alzheimer's disease: a systematic review. Send correspondence to. The P plays a key role as a method for monitoring and evaluating dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. METHODS: We searched in the following databases: Web of Science, Pub Med, Psyc Info, Medline, Biological Abstracts and Scielo using the following keywords: speed of information processing, processing speed, information processing, aged, older, elderly, older people, alzheimer dementia, alzheimer disease, Alzheimer and cross-references of selected articles. These studies showed that there is a consensus on a P latency increase of elderly patients with Alzheimer's disease compared with subjects without the disease. However, it appears that, with respect to the P amplitude, there is still no consensus; however, it may be related to different methodological variables adopted in the reviewed studies. Keywords: aging, alzheimer disease, cognition, event-related potentials, p
The neural loci of P3a and P3b generation are outlined, and a cognitive model is proffered: P3a originates from stimulus-driven frontal attention mechanisms.
