Interventional radiology uses minimally invasive techniques and imaging guidance to perform procedures that can replace conventional surgery. The Vascular and Interventional Radiology Section at Elliot Hospital provides the full range of interventional radiology care for patients, including diagnostic arteriography, renal and peripheral vascular interventions, biliary, gastrointestinal and genitourinary interventions, venous access procedures, embolization, kyphoplasty and pain management procedures.

Interventional radiology is a medical specialisation that involves performing a range of imaging procedures to obtain images of the inside of the body. The interventional radiologist carefully interprets these images to diagnose injury and disease, and to perform a range of interventional medical procedures. Interventional radiologist use imaging techniques such as X-rays, MRIs magnetic resonance imaging scans, fluoroscopy an X-ray procedure that makes it possible to see internal organs in motion , CT computed tomography scans and ultrasounds. Interventional radiologists perform a broad range of procedures such as treating tumours, taking organ biopsies or placing stents by inserting tiny instruments and thin plastic tubes catheters into the body via an artery or vein.

Written in a case-based format, the book is subdivided into ten chapters made up of ten vascular and non-vascular interventional radiology cases. Each case contains illustrations and legends describing the imaging findings and technical details of each intervention, comments from anatomical, physiopathological and radiological standpoints, as well as a description of the interventional procedure and the required interventional devices.

Interventional radiology has become an integral part of patient care services offered at many secondary and tertiary care hospitals in India. In addition to the routine elective consultation and procedural care for various vascular, nonvascular, and oncologic conditions, the interventional radiology service is being increasingly involved in the treatment of emergency conditions such as acute stroke or acute pulmonary embolism. The emergency interventional radiology service is more challenging compared with the elective service in several aspects, including, but not limited to, the need for quick decision-making given the clinical status of the patient, availability of resources for early intervention, and availability of alternative therapeutic options. There are several factors that influence the outcome of emergency interventional treatment. These can be categorized into three groups: patient , material , and man power. The patient factors include the clinical status, ability to obtain the history and consent in a timely fashion, presence of a known diagnosis linked to the emergency problem, and associated comorbid conditions.

This reduces the need for traditional open or keyhole laparoscopic surgery as treatment can be given via a small plastic tube about the size of a straw.
