Promoting ethical culture in firms through the adoption of effective ethics and compliance programs has been a cornerstone of the United States Federal Sentencing Guidelines for Organizations, introduced in by the federal Sentencing Commission. Firms can alleviate the harshest aspect of criminal liability by showing adherence to these guidelines, and thus mitigate the potential range of fines imposed on them in the event of wrongdoing. Providing incentives for companies to self-regulate has fueled widespread adoption of ethics and compliance programs. Yet, wrongdoing still persists.
Business ethics also known as corporate ethics is a form of applied ethics or professional ethics , that examines ethical principles and moral or ethical problems that can arise in a business environment. It applies to all aspects of business conduct and is relevant to the conduct of individuals and entire organizations. These norms, values, ethical, and unethical practices are the principles that guide a business. They help those businesses maintain a better connection with their stakeholders. Business ethics refers to contemporary organizational standards, principles, sets of values and norms that govern the actions and behavior of an individual in the business organization. Business ethics have two dimensions, normative business ethics or descriptive business ethics.
Compliance programs increasingly take a legalistic approach to ethics that focuses on individual accountability. Yet behavioral science suggests that people are ethically malleable, so creating an ethical culture means thinking about ethics not simply as a belief problem but also as a design problem. The authors suggest four ways to make being good as easy as possible: Connect ethical principles to strategies and policies, keep ethics top of mind, reward ethical behavior through a variety of incentives, and encourage ethical norms in day-to-day practices.
Historically there have been differences among investigators regarding the definition of organizational culture. Edgar H. Schein , a leading researcher in this field, defined "organizational culture" as comprising a number of features, including a shared "pattern of basic assumptions" which group members have acquired over time as they learn to successfully cope with internal and external organizationally relevant problems. The study concerned itself with the description, analysis, and development of corporate group behaviours. Ravasi and Schultz characterise organizational culture as a set of shared assumptions that guide behaviors.

Metrics details. This paper provides a viewpoint of the culture and subcultures at Google Inc. Through its history of development, it has had positive impacts on society; however; there have been management challenges. The Board of Directors BoDs developed and implemented a way to measure the abilities of their managers, which helped to identify problems. It will also compare Google with Zappos, a much smaller organization, and present how the BoDs of Zappos assesses its culture and subcultures. In this paper, we will recommend eight important points to building an organizational culture that is positive for stable growth of a company. We believe that much of what be learned could be useful to other business leaders, regardless of company scale.
Can companies be identified by how ethical they are? The concept of organizational culture suggests that organizations have identifiable cultures of which ethics are a part. By definition culture is the shared beliefs of an organization's members, hence the ethical culture of an organization would be reflected in the beliefs about the ethics of an organization which are shared by its members.
