Background: The presence or absence of blood group antigens has been associated with various diseases, with antigens also acting as receptors for infectious agents. Scanty literature is available in assessing the relative liability of blood group phenotypes to periodontal diseases. This research was conducted to determine the association of the ABO blood group and Rhesus Rh factor to periodontal diseases to assess whether they could be the predictors of periodontal diseases.
Materials and Methods: A total of 1, subjects aged between 20 and 55 years were selected on a random basis.
The study populations were segregated into three groups according to Ramfjord's periodontal disease index: Healthy, Gingivitis and Periodontitis.
Blood samples were collected to identify the ABO blood groups and the Rh factor by the slide method. Results: Blood group A showed a significantly higher percentage in the gingivitis group and blood group O showed a higher percentage in the periodontitis group. The blood group AB showed the least percentage of periodontal diseases.
The distribution of Rh factor in all groups showed a significantly higher distribution of Rh-positive. Conclusion: The genetic factors may alter the oral ecology and the process of periodontal disease. These data are suggestive of a broad correlation between periodontal diseases and blood groups, which may act as risk predictors for periodontal diseases. This will make it possible to better-understand the risk factors of diseases of the periodontal tissues and to predict the effective methods of prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases.

Associations between the blood type and disease have been studied since the early s when researchers determined that antibodies and antigens are inherited. However, due to lack of antigens of some blood groups, there have been some contentious issues with the association between the ABO blood group and vulnerability to certain infectious and noninfectious diseases. To review different literatures that show the association between ABO blood groups and different diseases. Original, adequate, and recent articles on the same field were researched, and the researcher conducted a comprehensive review on this topic. Thus, taking out critical discussions, not only a descriptive summary of the topic but also contradictory ideas were fully retrieved and presented in a clear impression.
ABO is the best-known system for grouping blood types , though there are other methods. Within these groups, there are a further eight blood types. Every 2 seconds , a person in the United States needs blood. When a person needs a transfusion , doctors must give them the right type. The wrong blood type can trigger an adverse reaction that could be life-threatening. How does blood work, and what problems can arise?
ABO blood group system , the classification of human blood based on the inherited properties of red blood cells erythrocytes as determined by the presence or absence of the antigens A and B, which are carried on the surface of the red cells. See blood group. Blood containing red cells with type A antigen on their surface has in its serum fluid antibodies against type B red cells. In the same way, type A red cells will be destroyed by anti-A antibodies in type B blood.
