From personalized computers in our pockets to self-driving cars, the world is at our fingertips today thanks to technology. Technology has advanced into many areas of our lives, making information more accessible, improving communication, changing transportation, and the list goes on.

Science, Technology, and Society in the Course Catalog. Science, Technology and Society STS is an interdisciplinary field that studies the conditions under which the production, distribution and utilization of scientific knowledge and technological systems occur; the consequences of these activities upon different groups of people. STS builds on the history and philosophy of science and technology, sociology and anthropology, policy studies, and cultural and literary studies; all of which shape the modes of analysis deployed in the field. The intercollegiate program brings together courses taught in a variety of departments, and is divided into three principal areas: history of science and technology, philosophy of science and technology, and social science approaches to technology and science.

Sauna and alcohol kill the coronavirus! This was such a splendid piece of news at the beginning of the first wave of the coronavirus. As Finns, we were, of course, already familiar with these aids. The news item was not incorrect as such, but its interpretations might go badly wrong. We are living in a world where information keeps bursting out from various media channels. Even at present, these media keep providing news on the Covid pandemic and some elements of this information flow are dangerously incorrect.

Science and technology are present in our daily life. In addition, we have recently seen how political decision-making draws on science. Indeed, it is important to understand how scientific knowledge is constructed, and distinguish between scientific and everyday knowledge, and especially tell it apart from fake news and disinformation.

We can use science communication to increase science-related knowledge among adults, in particular. Children and youth receive science education at school, but in addition to this, there are, for instance, various workshops, camps and lectures available to them.

Along with these, children and adolescents can learn, among other things, cognitive skills and problem-solving while better understanding the construction of knowledge and the scientific process.

These skills help them manage better in our present society. Science education can also generate an interest in university studies, and increase positive attitudes towards science in society. According to the aims proposed by a Ministry of Education and Culture committee for , Finland was to be ranked as a top country in science education. In this respect, science museums and science centres have strong traditions, but universities have also noted the importance of science education.

The Open Science Centre will be located in in the Library Building, which is currently undergoing renovation. The new facilities will help convey topical information through exhibitions, panel discussions and other science events.

As rational people, we think we make many of our decisions based solely on facts. Despite this, emotions are always involved in decision-making — and that is all right.

When the news concerns our own health or survival, we tend to react quickly and emotionally. Our fast-moving minds take in the information without questioning or analysing it.

So just to be on the safe side, we buy some alcohol and go to sauna more frequently. Science-related knowledge and scientific literacy provide essential tools for surviving in the news jungle and for responsible citizenship.

They also teach us to understand our own actions, to review them critically, and to take care of our rights. This is why science education is important. Jonna Timonen, PhD. Copycats in science: The role of replication Science at multiple levels. Those ideas are inherently tentative, but as they cycle through the process of science again and again and are tested and retested in different ways, we become increasingly confident in them. Furthermore, through this same iterative process, ideas are modified, expanded, and combined into more powerful explanations. So although the process of science is iterative, ideas do not churn through it repetitively. Instead, the cycle actively serves to construct and integrate scientific knowledge. And that knowledge is useful for all sorts of things: from designing bridges, to slowing climate change, to prompting frequent hand washing during flu season.

Science affects us all, every day of the year. From Ben Franklin's studies of static and lightning in the s, to Alessandro Volta's first battery, to the key discovery of the relationship between electricity and magnetism, science has steadily built up our understanding of electricity, which today carries our voices over telephone lines, brings entertainment to our televisions, and keeps the lights on. The first completely synthetic plastic was made by a chemist in the early s, and since then, chemistry has developed a wide variety of plastics suited for all sorts of jobs, from blocking bullets to making slicker dental floss. Science has transformed the way we eat today. In the s, biologists began developing high-yield varieties of corn, wheat, and rice, which, when paired with new fertilizers and pesticides developed by chemists, dramatically increased the amount of food that could be harvested from a single field, ushering in the Green Revolution. These science-based technologies triggered striking changes in agriculture, massively increasing the amount of food available to feed the world and simultaneously transforming the economic structure of agricultural practices.

“Technology are the devices that make my daily life easier. For example, thanks to technology, I can make research on the web, play games and read books on.

Science is the greatest collective endeavor. It contributes to ensuring a longer and healthier life, monitors our health, provides medicine to cure our diseases, alleviates aches and pains, helps us to provide water for our basic needs — including our food, provides energy and makes life more fun, including sports, music, entertainment and the latest communication technology. Last but not least, it nourishes our spirit. Science generates solutions for everyday life and helps us to answer the great mysteries of the universe. In other words, science is one of the most important channels of knowledge. It has a specific role, as well as a variety of functions for the benefit of our society: creating new knowledge, improving education, and increasing the quality of our lives. Science must respond to societal needs and global challenges.

Technology society and life or technology and culture refers to the inter-dependency, co-dependence , co-influence, and co-production of technology and society upon one another. Evidence for this synergy has been found since humanity first started using simple tools. The inter-relationship has continued as modern technologies such as the printing press and computers have helped shape society. The first scientific approach to this relationship occurred with the development of tektology , the "science of organization", in early twentieth century Imperial Russia. The simplest form of technology is the development and use of basic tools.

In present global situation, numerous powerful technologies have been developed to assist people in households and offices.
