The fable itself is a variant of a common folktale theme in which ingenuity and trickery rather than doggedness are employed to overcome a stronger opponent. The story concerns a Hare who ridicules a slow-moving Tortoise. Tired of the Hare's arrogant behaviour, the Tortoise challenges him to a race. When the Hare awakes however, he finds that his competitor, crawling slowly but steadily, has arrived before him. As in several other fables by Aesop, the lesson it is teaching appears ambiguous.

I'll finish the race when I wake up and still beat you by miles.' The Hare lay down in the sun and fell asleep. The Tortoise kept going. Slowly, steadily he moved.

And the important lessons of these tales have seeped into the very fabric of our cultures, turning up in many expressions including sour grapes, and slow and steady wins the race. In The Tortoise and the Hare, a quick rabbit challenges a slow turtle to a race, convinced that he cannot lose. But the hare s confidence leads him to take a long nap a mistake that allows the plodding turtle to cross the finish line first!

Nov 2, - Being a person who is low on spurts of energy, I quite identify with the tortoise in Aesop's fable. This download is available to members only. Given his great speed, boastful Hare is certain he will beat humble Tortoise in a race. This bright, cheerful PDF edition of the story is just what you need to add pizzazz to your lesson plans!

As the race goes on, the Tortoise finds himself in trouble. He tripped and now he is stuck on his back. The Hare runs right past the Tortoise!
