I will always love Ray Brabury's books. They are never boring, never the same, they never have long descriptions or silly dialogues. It's simply a beautiful story. Splotchy watercolors interrupted with segments of pretty prose.
Something about aging and stuff all set on another planet. The abbreviated nature of the story is obvious as its mediocrity. Not sure how well this compares to its source but this stone is better left unturned.

This is the story of a species stranded on a planet not their own. Because of the severe climate and radiation their life span has been reduced to 8 days in some areas and 11 days in others. In the spirit of evolution they have "adapted".
In that handful of days they grow, mature, breed, age and die. This is accepted by most. Not Sim. Sim is our hero and he is hellben Bradbury's books always feel like I am reading a dream. Sim is our hero and he is hellbent on finding a way to expand those 8 days. First for himself. Later for those who come after him. He is an unselfish hero and eventually succeeds. This is short, which is fitting, but I think it could have been pages and Bradbury would have told the story in an engrossing way.
This is one where I wish it was not. View 2 comments. Jun 21, Roya rated it really liked it Shelves: short-story , classics. Loved it, except for the ending. Was it supposed to convey hope? Too rushed, poorly handled - unlike the rest of the story.
This is a graphic novel adaptation of Ray Bradbury's wonderful story of the same title. Unfortunately, it comes nowhere close to doing the tale justice. To do so it would have needed to be a number of pages longer and the ending shouldn't have been tampered with.
It was an intersting experiment but I found it badly flawed. May 20, Viktoriia rated it it was ok. This is the short story which meant to convey the fast-fleeing life of one person, commenting on the mortality, purpose of life, place of an individual within society. However, as is the issue with his other work, the author just jumps from one point to another, making the story and characters seem inconsistent and illogical.
Then suddenly in the last chapter when he reaches a ship with his girlfriend, he tells her that now he has to go back to retreat their people, to which his girlfriend points out how it is dangerous and probably not worth it, so he accuses her of being selfish.
Your entire life mission was self-centered even if right and inspiring , and now it is painted as this grad salvation thing?.. It really annoyed me. I understand that his character is metaphorical and he is meant to represent a pioneer, brave explorer, but common! Feb 08, Jeff rated it it was amazing.
Ray Bradbury's short story "Frost and Fire" is one of my all-time favorites - one that I first read as a young adult and really stimulated my imagination. I recently listened to an old audio performance of this story, but nothing beats the written version in my view! Aug 20, Greg Santana rated it it was ok. Well, this was a weak one. But I get it. Except he left a lot of things out. Except the only Noble people are the Scientists oh, so selfless. The very conscious-of-his-impending-death protagonist wants three more days, but the minute he gets it he forgets about it and throws them away.
Th Well, this was a weak one. The protagonist hurts his leg and then goes for an impossible run just fine. That was a weird aside. This is the old story of an author bending everything to his will. He has an idea, he has a plot, and everything else be damned. This is a story where you can skimm and not lose much. A funny coincidence since the characters themselves are running fast to get to the end. Typical Adventure problems. A remarkable story I first read this novella when I first discovered science fiction.
I was retelling it to my husband when I began to realize what an impact it had on me. It taught me about courage, about commitment, about the gift of learning and the gift of curiosity and discovery. It was the right read at the right time and did what good literature is supposed to do.
It opened my mind in a flash and expanded my world to infinite horizons. Dec 13, Stephanie Ricker rated it it was amazing Shelves: science-fiction. We recently watched the short film Quest , which was very loosely based on this short story, so I wanted to read the original. Much better than Quest, I have to say, and more of a psychological exploration of what people would be like if our lifespans were only eight days, as opposed to the, um, quest of the movie.
As usual, Ray Bradbury does it best. Aug 25, Jane rated it it was amazing. Bradbury wrote an excellent short story. It's an intriguing tale, in which people mature rapidly and live only 8 days, due to radiation and extreme weather conditions. The protagonist is a brave and hopeful young man who embarks on a means to improve quality of life for all.
By Ray Bradbury. Just be careful to walk around at night. The hot sun is certainly difficult on you. So the best thing for you to do is wait for chilly weather. The first six months are your prime. The seventh month the water will seep through and the maggots will begin. By the end of the eighth month your usefulness will dwindle.
