Discussion Questions

Language development in humans is a process starting early in life. Infants start without knowing a language, yet by 10 months, babies can distinguish speech sounds and engage in babbling. Some research has shown that the earliest learning begins in utero when the fetus starts to recognize the sounds and speech patterns of its mother's voice and differentiate them from other sounds after birth. Typically, children develop receptive language abilities before their verbal or expressive language develops. As receptive language continues to increase, expressive language begins to slowly develop. According to a general principle of development, new forms then take over old functions, so that children learn words to express the same communicative functions they had already expressed by proverbial means.

Main actions

Language is a communication system that involves using words and systematic rules to organize those words to transmit information from one individual to another. While language is a form of communication, not all communication is language. Many species communicate with one another through their postures, movements, odors, or vocalizations. This communication is crucial for species that need to interact and develop social relationships with their conspecifics. This section will focus on what distinguishes language as a special form of communication, how the use of language develops, and how language affects the way we think.

Language acquisition is the process by which humans acquire the capacity to perceive and comprehend language in other words, gain the ability to be aware of language and to understand it , as well as to produce and use words and sentences to communicate. Language acquisition involves structures, rules and representation. The capacity to use language successfully requires one to acquire a range of tools including phonology , morphology , syntax , semantics , and an extensive vocabulary. Language can be vocalized as in speech, or manual as in sign.
