Friedman explains that we now live and have done so only since around in a highly connected, globalised world , creating a level hence, flat playing field in terms of trade and commerce. Friedman discusses the implications of new situation: that even though the the developed economies of North America and Western Europe are losing jobs to Asia and, to a lesser extent, Eastern Europe, these are, on the whole, jobs that require low level skills such as manufacturing, data processing and call centres, jobs that can either be automated or outsourced. Both books highlight what we should be teaching and why. Friedman identifies five main themes that schools should focus on in order to prepare their students for the flat world, what he calls The Right Stuff. Students need to be able to teach themselves and be prepared to constantly absorb new information and develop new skills. Students need to be able to navigate around the Internet and separate the garbage from the wisdom.
In , Christopher Columbus set out to demonstrate that the world was round. Five hundred plus years later, Thomas Friedman set his sights on explaining that the real new world had a different shape. The book has become a huge best-seller in the United States and abroad. And a phrase that once suggested cluelessness — the world is flat — became a marker of sophistication. Educators across America read the work, discussed its arguments and reflected on what it meant for their schools. Meanwhile, Friedman, whose day job is penning a foreign affairs column for The New York Times , began hearing from readers who urged him to expand the book. And what readers most wanted to hear about was education, something that Friedman, whose wife is a long-time public school teacher in suburban Maryland and whose daughter is a first-year teacher in Washington, D.
In this chapter, Dr. Linda Darling-Hammond utilizes three states to emphasize further how good uses of resources can lead to successful student achievement. Connecticut and North Carolina exemplify the effective utilization of resources, while California demonstrates the consequences of mismanagement and neglect. The success in Connecticut and North Carolina, for example, is remarkable given the fact that their populations of low socioeconomic levels as well as of English Language Learners increased. The failures in California point to the enervating results of poor funding structures combined with inadequate teacher preparation, stagnant curricula, and unreasonable expectations. Contrasting the two assists the reader in discriminating between constructive and destructive school policies and muddling through the intricacies of governmental mandates that may benefit or incapacitate students—especially the traditionally and historically underserved. Finland shifted from a centralized to a localized system that emphasizes resources for the most needy, high standards and supports for special needs, expert and inexpensive teacher preparation and professional development opportunities, and ongoing evaluation to profit from the interplay of theory and practice.
