Ammonia is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with the formula NH 3. A stable binary hydride , and the simplest pnictogen hydride , ammonia is a colourless gas with a characteristic pungent smell. It is a common nitrogenous waste , particularly among aquatic organisms, and it contributes significantly to the nutritional needs of terrestrial organisms by serving as a precursor to food and fertilizers. Ammonia, either directly or indirectly, is also a building block for the synthesis of many pharmaceutical products and is used in many commercial cleaning products. It is mainly collected by downward displacement of both air and water.

Ammonia boiling point Ammonium hydroxide exhibits the characteristics of a weak base, turning litmus paper blue, and neutralizing acids with the formation of ammonium salts. The copper II ammonia complex , in solution , is deep blue in color , and serves as a qualitative test for copper. It also has the ability to dissolve cellulose , and has been used in the process for making regenerated cellulose fibers, or rayon. Ammonia molecules possess a pyramidal shape, with the nitrogen atom at the vertex. These molecules continually undergo a type of motion called inversion, in which the nitrogen atom passes through the plane of the three hydrogen atoms like an umbrella turning inside out in the wind. When ammonia acts as a base, the nitrogen atom bonds either to a proton to form ammonium ion or to a metal cation.

Deionized, tap and two kinds of commercially available mineralized water, after supplementation with ammonia, were treated with low-pressure, low-temperature glow plasma GP of low frequency. Treating hard water with ammonia provided the removal of permanent and temporary water hardness already at room temperature. On such treatment, mineralized water supplemented with ammonia was partly demineralized. The rate and yield of precipitation depended on the concentration of admixed ammonia and the GP treatment time. Ammonia served as a ligand of calcium, magnesium and ferric central atoms of corresponding salts constituting the hardness.

Selected chemical and physical properties, toxicokinetic and mechanistic data, and inhalation-exposure levels from the National Research Council NRC and other agencies are also presented. Ammonia is a corrosive alkaline gas at room temperature Budavari et al. It is colorless and has a distinctive odor that has been described as sharp, pungent, and irritating HSDB

The effect of heat and ammonia treatment on colour response of oak wood Quercus robur and comparison of some physical and mechanical properties. Corresponding author. In this paper the effect of heat and ammonia treatment on the change in colour of oak wood Quercus robur. The results show that the heat treatment contributed to darkening of sapwood and heartwood and the total colour change increased up to Previous research into ammonia treatment shows that the most significant changes were noticed after 1 day.

Ammonia NH 3 , colourless, pungent gas composed of nitrogen and hydrogen. It is the simplest stable compound of these elements and serves as a starting material for the production of many commercially important nitrogen compounds. The major use of ammonia is as a fertilizer.

Ammonia is highly stable. However, it can be decomposed into hydrogen and nitrogen by passing over heated metallic catalysts or when electric discharge is passed through it.
